The project aims to provide a one-stop shop platform that contains all maps and geospatial data for Dubai, including spatial data of urban planning, real estate, buildings and constructions, roads and transportation, utility networks, aerial and satellite images, statistical, environmental and economic activities. It is also considered one of the major projects under the GEO Dubai initiative. With Dubai SDI, decision makers, government employees, and investors can access maps and spatial data from a single source easily and quickly using the latest technology. This will save time and effort and contribute to achieving the smart city, where maps and geospatial data are extremely important for providing smart services. Dubai SDI geo-portal contains many layers of maps and geospatial data for the Emirate of Dubai, which are produced, updated, and shared by the geo-spatial community members. Members include the governmental and semi-governmental entities, the free zone authorities, the private sector, and individuals, which reach more than 50 bodies and beneficiaries. SDI consists of the necessary equipment for storing and managing maps such as servers and backup devices, as well as geospatial databases and standard maps for the exchange of documents, in addition to agreements and policies for the production and exchange of maps and human capacity building programs and raising the level of geospatial maturity in the Emirate. Dubai's SDI reduces the cost, effort and time required to create, update and maintain geospatial maps by sharing maps between all entities using the available infrastructure. It also contributes to avoid duplication of projects between entities and increases the level of coordination and integration between them.​ ​
